[REVIEW] 2015 Grammy Predictions x Pop/Dance

2015grammys_popdanceThe 2015 pop/dance categories features six artists in the ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ category, which tells me it was hard for the Grammys to choose their finalists. This also means that it was harder for me to predict winners outside of Sia and Katy Perry (2014 list).

Best Pop Solo Performance (Category 5)
John Legend – “All Of Me (Live)”
Sia – “Chandelier”
Sam Smith – “Stay With Me (Darkchild Version)”
Taylor Swift – “Shake It Off”
Pharrell Williams – “Happy (Live)”

Who Should Win: Sia – “Chandelier”

Who Will Win: Taylor Swift – “Shake It Off”

Sia’s nomination is the most deserving in this category, but Sam Smith is trailing behind her as a close second. But since popularity matters, expect Taylor to be rewarded early for her ‘1989’ era antics.

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (Category 6)
Iggy Azalea (feat. Charli XCX) – “Fancy”
Coldplay – “A Sky Full Of Stars”
A Great Big World (feat. Christina Aguilera) – “Say Something”
Jessie J (feat. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj) – “Bang Bang”
Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J) – “Dark Horse”

Who Should Win: Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J) – “Dark Horse”

Who Will Win: Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J) – “Dark Horse”

Katy’s single is the only one of the five nominees that made history by becoming the most played song on mainstream radio…ever. The only other nominee that even comes close to winning here is Iggy’s “Fancy”, which means Katy doesn’t have that much competition to begin with anyway.

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album (Category 7)
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga – ‘Cheek To Cheek’
Annie Lennox – ‘Nostalgia’
Barry Manilow – ‘Night Songs’
Johnny Mathis – ‘Sending You A Little Christmas’
Barbra Streisand – ‘Partners’

Who Should Win: Barbra Streisand – ‘Partners’

Who Will Win: Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga – ‘Cheek To Cheek’

While some of the songs on ‘Cheek To Cheek’ came off a bit too forced than I’d normally like, Barbra’s collaborative ‘Partners’ album found her amongst some of the best for her 34th (duets cover) album.

Best Pop Vocal Album (Category 8)
Coldplay – ‘Ghost Stories’
Miley Cyrus – ‘Bangerz’
Ariana Grande – ‘My Everything’
Katy Perry – ‘Prism’
Ed Sheeran – ‘X’
Sam Smith – ‘In The Lonely Hour’

Who Should Win: Katy Perry – ‘Prism’

Who Will Win: Sam Smith – ‘In The Lonely Hour’

As much as ‘Prism’ deserves the win in this category, Sam’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ will 100% surely win this category if he loses to Beyonce’ for ‘Album Of The Year’. If Beyonce’ doesn’t win, however, it’s smooth sailing for Katy here.

Best Dance Recording (Category 9)
Basement Jaxx – “Never Say Never”
Clean Bandit (feat. Jess Glynne) – “Rather Be”
Disclosure (feat. Mary J. Blige) – “F For You”
Duke Dumont (feat. Jax Jones) – “I Got U”
Zhu – “Faded”

Who Should Win: Disclosure (feat. Mary J. Blige) – “F For You”

Who Will Win: Basement Jaxx – “Never Say Never”

Despite an extremely controversial video (see above), Basement Jaxx’s “Never” scorched clubs internationally, leaving the light burns of Disclosure’s “F For You” redux with Mary J. Blige to remain a supporting act.

Best Dance/Electronic Album (Category 10)
Aphex Twin – ‘Syro’
Deadmaus – ‘While (1<2)’
Little Dragon – ‘Nabuma Rubberband’
Röyksopp & Robyn – ‘Do It Again’
Mat Zo – ‘Damage Control’

Who Should Win: Little Dragon – ‘Nabuma Rubberband’

Who Will Win: Röyksopp & Robyn – ‘Do It Again’

Little Dragon are the most deserving here, but Robyn’s collaborative ‘Do It Again’ album is just too epic to leave the Grammys empty-handed.
