Dubbed by TUA as ‘The Voice of British Pop’, Florence + the Machine’s lead vocalist Florence Welch is one of my favorite #coverqueens. Without question, one of her best pop/urban covers to date is Drake’s “Take Care” and is undoubtedly her strongest live vocal to date. As Florence has been seen nearly everywhere with indie producer Dev Hynes (Solange’, Theophilus London), their musical mesh of talents has provided an even bigger reward. Taking on Icona Pop’s breakout hit “I Love It” for the Human Rights Campaign’s annual event, Welch boasts a commanding, powerful vocal over the uptempo smash. Unlike the original, Florence spends more time breaking down the verses and ends the cover with the most iconic line from the song (“You’re from the 70s and I’m a 90’s…”). I love how only a voice like Florence’s can turn these radio-friendly uptempos into dark, haunting vocals. This cover is so good that I’m certain a proper recording and release would shoot to the top of iTunes. Watch and download Florence Welch and Dev Hynes’ cover of Icona Pop’s “I Love It” below.
