Could Charli XCX’s latest single top the success of her collaboration with Iggy Azalea? On the Greg Kurstin-assisted “Famous”, it seems that the British-turned-mainstream superstar is looking to achieve just that. The fourth official single lifted from her critically acclaimed album ‘Sucker’ may find the singer-songwriter accomplishing even bigger territory with the song’s extreme catchiness alone. Viewed as a #melodycraftsmaster, “Famous” sounds like it could be the big sister to her “Fancy” predecessor, much how Azealia Banks’ “Yung Rapunxel” had a somewhat familial relationship with “212”. “One night, and we’re gonna come and crash the party / weren’t invited but we’re feeling so outrageous / just like we’re famous” sings Charli on the “Famous” chorus, which can also be sung to the tune of Azalea’s “Fancy”. Despite extremely noticeable similarities, “Famous” excels as a strong summery offering from ‘Sucker’ since previous singles “Break The Rules” and the Rita Ora-assisted “Doing It” both failed to match the success of “Boom Clap” – her biggest hit to date. Releasing “Famous” is a risky move, but I’m convinced it’s the most marketable attempt to make Charli’s superstardom match the level that she’s helped so many others achieve.
