The Scissor Sisters get even gayer (for them) on their newest single – and I mean that as an extreme compliment. Born and raised in New York City, the group’s “Let’s Have A Kiki” is almost a tribute to the city’s gay nightlife right from it’s hilarious opening skit – “you know the MTA should stand for muthaf*ckas touching my ass”. “Kiki” continues with an irrestible bassline and equally impressive beat switch, all while lead singers Jake Shears and Ana Matronic chant it out:
“A kiki is a party for calming all your nerves
We’re spilling tea and dishing just desserts where they deserve”
Judging from their first three albums (Scissor Sisters, Ta-Dah, and Night Work), their band’s efforts to glamorize the city’s gay nightlife bring about a new music revolution. Americans, however, aren’t quite ready for the “kikis”, the “reads”, and the “gags”, although such vernacular is heavily used in scripted Bravo and VH1 reality shows. This type of linguistics would never make it to the #mainstream, but I can’t blame the Scissor Sisters for trying, simply because it works wonderfully in a strange indie-meets-ballroom manner.
