We can all give thanks to Azealia Banks (well, at least the females) for the first official club-banger of 2013. “BBD”, short for “bad bitches do-it”, takes a “trap-meets-banji-meets-house” approach to the female anthem trend. The hard-hitting rap track was produced by indie producer (and former Timbaland drummer!) Apple Juice Kid (Mos Def, MC Lyte, Wale) and Chapel Hill’s own Sup Doodle, giving a great sense of the influence to the song’s pulsing production. Azealia coyly raps about sexual encounters from a woman’s perspective while metaphorically adding her own hip-hop quotables (“it’s that sporty bitch that game ’em, they calling me Super Sega”). On the somewhat inspirational/cocky side, Banks raps “tits out with yo wife nigga, I’m bringing out the dyke in her” with a level of bi-curious confidence that rightfully places “BBD” on my ‘best of 2013’ playlist already. The song also serves as a buzz single to Azealia’s debut studio release ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’, supposedly out in mid-February. If “BBD” really represents a #lyricaltaste of what’s in store on Azealia’s album, the ‘Yung Rapunxel’ rapper is about to slay. Listen and download “BBD” below.
