Singer Ashlee Simpson hasn’t been in the spotlight since the birth of her son Bronx in late 2008, but she’s been actively recording material to follow-up her critically underrated third album ‘Bittersweet World’. The album, primarily produced by Timbaland, may have only spawned two singles but it stands as her best album to date. As Simpson begins promo for her as-yet-untitled fourth effort, she enlists the grandeur Linda Perry (Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”, Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman”) for the album’s buzz single “Bat For A Heart”. The midtempo, electronic number continues to showcase Ashlee’s range as a singer, but this time with even better songwriting than her ‘Bittersweet World’ days. The artistically shot black-and-white video for “Heart” continues her somewhat dark persona (possibly from her divorce with Pete Wentz) as she sings “I’m gonna bang, bang / fuck you up / twist you out inside of my head” directly into the camera with piercing conviction. “Heart” seems like a slight departure for both artists, especially because the song sounds like something her other pop predecessors (Ellie Goulding, Sky Ferreira) should be singing. Either way, it’s great to see that Ashlee’s true artistry is finally making its debut to the world, giving hope to her upcoming fourth album. Watch and download Ashlee’s “Bat For A Heart” below.
