[VINTAGE] Tamar Braxton (feat. Missy Elliott and Lil’ Mo) x ‘No Disrespect’

Tamar Braxton hasn’t exactly made the best name for herself since her 2000 platinum selling single “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me”. She’s instead made a name on the WE TV’s ‘Braxton Family Values’ as the loud, arrogant younger sister of R&B superstar Toni Braxton. While adding #domaninspired nonsense to her daily dialect (“dot-com”, “hot-mess-dot-org”) as a favorite past-time, producing hit singles hasn’t been in Tamar’s radar. Before the heavily-Gaga endorsed 2013 single “Love And War” came a self-titled debut album from Braxton that was groundbreaking for R&B. Many years before C. Tricky Stewart went on to produce Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” and Katy Perry’s “Hummingbird Heartbeat”, the sought out producer was writing hits for Tamar. Although he produced most of the songs on Tamar’s debut, “No Disrespect” is a very rare gem that comes thanks to the great Missy Elliott. Also featuring Lil’ Mo, “Disrespect” is one of Tamar’s best vocals of all-time. The song’s subject matter and lyrics (“I’m not your hoe, I’m not you freak / I’m not your trick, but I’m naturally / Beautiful, high quality”) comes off funny in this day and age, but at least it gives hope that Tamar will return to these roots with her upcoming project. Tamar’s collaboration with Missy is one of the first and only for both artists, and Elliott’s uptempo production adds a great diversity to both artists’ catalogue. If this were ever released as a single in 2000, it would’ve went straight to number one. But for now, I’m still jamming to this instead of the shoutiness that became “Love And War”. Listen and download Tamar with Missy Elliott and Lil’ Mo’s “No Disrespect” below.

  1. I loooooooove Missy Elliott. Every thing she made back then was on point with those futuristic beats. I really wish she would return back to that style I miss her :-(((
