Award winning singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee has finally unleashed her lead single off her upcoming sophomore album and it’s a true summer staple. As the lead female artist on LA Reid’s newly created Epic Records (keyword: female, Ciara), Bonnie’s solo career comes just off the heels of her stellar songwriting for the likes of Katy Perry (“Teenage Dream”), Britney Spears (“Hold It Against Me”), and Rita Ora (“How We Do”). In short, “American Girl” is an all-out summer radio assault that everyone can relate to. The song’s extremely catchy chorus (“I was raised by a television, every day is a competition”) is so addictive that you’ll know the words just after one listen. As hard as it is to admit, Bonnie’s vocals sound light years better than any of the aforementioned artists she wrote songs for (hear an acoustic sample here). The song’s video treatment features an A-list cast belting out the favorite parts of the song – everyone from Kathy Griffin and rock stars KISS to the cast of ‘Fashion Police’ and Adam Lambert. But the best footage undoubtedly comes from the Queen of Pop Katy Perry, who closes the clip with asserting “and…there’s my competition”. With a hit formula like this paired with her own credentials, there’s no denying Bonnie from her own taste of superstardom. Watch the official “American Girl” video below.
