Australian-bred singer-songwriter Sia Furler has made a mainstream name out of herself by writing songs for the likes of Rihanna (“Diamonds”), Beyonce’ (“Standing On The Sun”), and Christina Aguilera (“You Lost Me”). After earning a Grammy nomination for her collaboration on Flo-Rida’s “Titanium” – originally written for Mary J. Blige – Sia garnered a large celebrity fanbase including EDM-producer Diplo. On “Elastic Heart”, Sia and R&B crooner The Weeknd trade verses over Diplo’s gritty midtempo beat. Her metaphoric songwriting shines brightly (no Rihanna pun intended) as she sings “I’m like a rubber band until you pull too hard, but I may snap when I move close / but you won’t see me fall apart, cuz I’ve got an elastic heart”. The song is no different from her ‘Some People Have Real Problems’ days, which boasts some of her best material to date (see “The Girl You Lost To Cocaine” and “Little Black Sandals”). As disappointed I am with the fact that none of the Diplo-Sia-Katy collaborations made it onto ‘Prism’, “Elastic Heart” paves a strong entry for Sia into mainstream heights – one on her own accord.
