[REVIEW] 2015 Grammy Predictions x Rap

2015grammys_rapEach year, the rap category is always one of the hardest to predict (2014 list). With a few undeserving crowd favorites nominated this year (Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj), it’s only a matter of time when popularity just may win over talent.

Best Rap Performance (Category 22)
Childish Gambino – “3005”
Drake – “0 To 100 / The Catch Up”
Eminem – “Rap God”
Kendrick Lamar – “i”
Lecrae – “All I Need Is You”

Who Should Win: Kendrick Lamar – “i”

Who Will Win: Drake – “0 To 100 / The Catch Up”

Drake’s flow is equal parts respectable and mainstream, which is why his performance on “0 To 100” will excel over the others. Kendrick and Lecrae, on the other hand, took the motivational/inspirational route which isn’t usually as noteworthy in this category.

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (Category 23)
Common (feat. Jhené Aiko) – “Blak Majik”
Eminem (feat. Rihanna) – “The Monster”
I Love Makonnen (feat. Drake) – “Tuesday”
Schoolboy Q (feat. BJ The Chicago Kid) – “Studio”
Kanye West (feat. Charlie Wilson) – “Bound 2”

Who Should Win: Eminem (feat. Rihanna) – “The Monster”

Who Will Win: Kanye West (feat. Charlie Wilson) – “Bound 2”

Eminem’s #1 single with Rihanna shattered radio and is still getting steady airplay today, while Kanye’s “Bound 2” is a soulful ode to his wife that barely got any spins. This win will be solely between these two, as the other three had much less of an overall impact.

Best Rap Song – Songwriter’s Award (Category 24)
Nicki Minaj – “Anaconda”
Songwriters: Ernest Clark, Jamal Jones, Onika Maraj, Marcos Palacios, and J. Solone-Myvett
Kanye West (feat. Charlie Wilson) – “Bound 2”
Songwriters: Mike Dean, Malik Jones, Che Pope, Elon Rutberg, Sakiya Sandifer, John Stephens, Kanye West, Charlie Wilson, and Cydel Young
Kendrick Lamar – “i”
Songwriters: K. Duckworth and C. Smith
Wiz Khalifa – “We Dem Boyz”
Songwriters: Noel Fisher and Cameron Thomaz
Drake – “0 To 100 / The Catch Up”
Songwriters: A. Feeney, Aubrey Graham, A. Hernandez, P. Jefferies, M. Samuels & Noah Shebib

Who Should Win: Kendrick Lamar – “i”

Who Will Win: Drake – “0 To 100 / The Catch Up”

In all honesty, I’d be satisfied with any song winning besides the tragedy that is “Anaconda”. Although Kanye’s ode to Kim was a soft spot the public may have never seen, both Kendrick and Drake delivered two of the best verses of the year.

Best Rap Album (Category 25)
Iggy Azalea – ‘The New Classic’
Childish Gambino – ‘Because The Internet’
Common – ‘Nobody’s Smiling’
Eminem – ‘The Marshall Mathers LP2’
Schoolboy Q – ‘Oxymoron’
Wiz Khalifa – ‘Blacc Hollywood’

Who Should Win: Childish Gambino – ‘Because The Internet’

Who Will Win: Eminem – ‘The Marshall Mathers LP2’

Childish Gambino should win off his collaboration with Azealia Banks (“Earth: The Oldest Computer”) alone, but Eminem’s singles from ‘The Marshall Mathers LP2’ did much more than most of the other nominees.
