The rock category is usually the most diverse, but I must admit that I’m shocked by the lack of females in the 2015 nominees group. Nevertheless, Grammy favorites like Jack White and The Black Keys may be upset by a newer generation of up-and-coming rock stars (2014 list).
Best Rock Performance (Category 12)
Ryan Adams – “Gimme Something Good”
Arctic Monkeys – “Do I Wanna Know?”
Beck – “Blue Moon”
The Black Keys – “Fever”
Jack White – “Lazaretto”
Who Should Win: Arctic Monkeys – “Do I Wanna Know?”
Who Will Win: The Black Keys – “Fever”
As much as I enjoy everything that Arctic Monkeys does, it’s the Black Keys’ seven-time Grammy streak that will give them the win in this category.
Best Metal Performance (Category 13)
Anthrax – “Neon Knights”
Mastodon – “High Road”
Motörhead – “Heartbreaker”
Slipknot – “The Negative One”
Tenacious D – “The Last In Line”
Who Should Win: Mastodon – “High Road”
Who Will Win: Slipknot – “The Negative One”
Although I’m new to Mastodon’s greatness, it’s Slipknot’s seventh time being nominated in this category. The strength of their six-year comeback alone should secure the metal band a trophy this year.
Best Rock Song – Songwriter’s Award (Category 14)
Paramore – “Ain’t It Fun”
Songwriters: Hayley Williams and Taylor York
Beck – “Blue Moon”
Songwriters: Beck Hansen
The Black Keys – “Fever”
Songwriters: D. Auerbach, B. Burton, and P. Carney
Ryan Adams – “Gimme Something Good”
Songwriters: Ryan Adams
Jack White – “Lazaretto”
Songwriters: Jack White III
Who Should Win: Paramore – “Ain’t It Fun”
Who Will Win: Jack White – “Lazaretto”
Paramore’s “Fun” became their highest charting single in a long time and has become a worldwide hit. Jack’s “Lazaretto”, however, oozes so much individuality that you can’t deny its greatness.
Best Rock Album (Category 15)
Ryan Adams – ‘Ryan Adams’
Beck – ‘Morning Phase’
The Black Keys – ‘Turn Blue’
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – ‘Hypnotic Eye’
U2 – ‘Songs Of Innocence’
Who Should Win: The Black Keys – ‘Turn Blue’
Who Will Win: Beck – ‘Morning Phase’
This category is especially tough because The Black Keys and Beck probably have the two best male rock albums of the Grammy eligibility period. But with Beck likely to lose in the Album Of The Year category, the Foundation will be looking to award him with this win.
Best Alternative Music Album (Category 16)
Alt-J – ‘This Is All Yours’
Arcade Fire – ‘Reflektor’
Cage The Elephant – ‘Melophobia’
St. Vincent – ‘St. Vincent’
Jack White – ‘Lazaretto’
Who Should Win: St. Vincent – ‘St. Vincent’
Who Will Win: St. Vincent – ‘St. Vincent’
After placing on many music critics’ ‘Best Of 2014’ lists, its extremely unlikely that St. Vincent will go home empty-handed. This album is truly unique, and makes her shine brightly as a female rocker in a sea of monotony.
