Chicago’s own BJ The Chicago Kid has released a consistent set of R&B covers and features since his arrival onto the music scene in 2006. The singer-songwriter has written for many artists within both R&B and gospel, but hasn’t released a studio album that has matched his potential. As a tribute to D’Angelo on the 16th anniversary of his song “Untitled”, BJ released a covers EP of classic material by the singer. The standout on this free album is BJ’s interpretation of D’s “Send It On” from the ‘Voodoo’ album. Co-written with Angie Stone, “Send It On” is a classic D’Angelo arrangement from his 2000 that’s quite reminiscent of his earlier works. BJ keeps the cover as true to the original as possible, but adds a few extra riffs towards the end to make his version stand out. With covers of this caliber, it’s only a matter of time before BJ’s official studio release becomes a priority for Motown.
