A lot of people may not know that Amy Winehouse’s underground hit “Valerie” is actually a cover of English dancehall band the Zutons’ hit song. Amy’s version skyrocketed the group to mainstream success worldwide, but her first performance of the cover was impromptu on the BBC Live stage. I’ve been loving the original version of Amy’s Live Lounge cover especially more since her untimely passing, and I can’t get over the richness of her live, unfiltered vocals. What Amy did with “Valerie” is soulful and unique, placing her British twang on the reggaeton classic brilliantly and making it an indie success for many years after it’s initial release in late 2007. “Valerie” went on to be one of the most successful, unofficial singles of her entire career.
