Roc Nation signees The Ting Tings are one of my favorite bands ever. Their first album ‘We Started Nothing’, for me, is beyond a huge understatement. Female vocalist Katie White sings the lead, and takes Lana’s dark lyrics to even darker territory with its guitar/harp arrangement. About halfway in, she switches to Ian Brown’s “Fear” with male vocalist/guitarist Jules de Martino pitching in to assist. The rockers in them really shine through around 2:56, with the distorted Skrillex sample chiming in with the simple push of a button. Overall, it’s good to see a more toned down production from the Ting Tings. The jokingly call-and-response nature of most of their mainstream hits make them appear like a radio band, but White’s “Born To Die” shows the band’s true vocal ability.
