Any Diplo collaboration with a vocalist is a grandeur affair, but his latest production for Russian-bred singer-songwriter Marina and the Diamonds is nothing short of amazing. “Lies”, an album cut from her sophomore album ‘Electra Heart’, is an electronic midtempo about a subject matter of the same name. “You only ever touch me, in the dark / only when we’re drinking, can you see my spark” sings a heartbroken Marina over Diplo’s addictive beat. Marina continues her metaphors about dishonest lovers with the greatest of ease, and makes the album cut shine brightly on ‘Electra Heart’ mainly due to its urban arrangement style. The song seems as if its different from Diplo’s normal productions (see “Express Yourself”), but true fans realize that it’s just his normal production techniques (hip-hop bounce mixed with EDM) being used for a different genre (pop/rock). Marina’s vocals are also better than ever, and her sexy accent pours through each of the verses, adding even more emotions to a powerful message. While “Lies” also makes the first pairing with the two artists, the success of the song itself has become very profitable, peaking at #35 on Itunes just two weeks after the album’s release.
