When Fall Out Boy announced they were going on a “hiatus” in 2009, it really broke my heart. The indie rock band’s fourth album ‘Folie a Deux’ has easily become one of my favorite records of all-time, not to mention that it’s also credited as the album that put me onto their greatness. Fall Out Boy’s lead vocalist Patrick Stump took advantage of the hiatus and spawned two critically acclaimed releases – the ‘Truant Wave’ (EP) and the ‘Soul Punk’ album, while Pete Wentz formed his own band Black Cards. After many rumors began circulating in late 2012 regarding a reunion, they became factual in 2013 with the unexpected (and random) release of “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)”. Known for their abnormally long titles and superb songwriting, “My Songs” is a great return for the band to their chart-topping roots.
The writers keep writing what they write
Somewhere another pretty vein just dies
I’ve got the scars from tomorrow and I wish you could see
That you’re the antidote to everything except for me
Stump’s songwriting is classic here as he sings about the band’s return to the limelight despite an ever-changing music industry. The video features 2 Chainz and two sexy models literally #lightingup the band’s pretenses. Has-beens? Artists from the past? Lyrical lyrics? The many myths about the band are accurately debunked in a short four minute clip – without alienating their massive fanbase. “My Songs” is a great single for the band to return to the charts with, and I’m expecting nothing less than a number one debut when their fifth album ‘Save Rock and Roll’ hits stores on April 15.
