[SONG + VIDEO] Coco Jones x ‘Unconditionally’ (Katy Perry Cover)

2013 BET Awards - ArrivalsWith hopes of following Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, and Demi Lovato to overcome the #disneyeffect in becoming a megastar is 15-year-old Coco Jones. The ‘So Random’ actress made recent waves with her vocals throughout her four years at Disney. Jones, however, has been singing for years, earning numerous ‘National Anthem’ appearances at MLB games. As a part of her latest string of covers, Coco bravely chose Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally” and does an overall good job. Unlike Perry, who normally sings in a softer, less intensive tone, Coco commands the power ballad and gives it a bit of soul. Coco really nails the two biggest parts of the song – the bridge (2:10-2:23) and the last full chorus (2:43-3:13) – and does it in a way that I haven’t seen Katy do live yet. However, coming from a finalist on Disney’s ‘Next Big Thing’ singing competition to delivering outstanding covers with an underperforming EP is enough to question her longevity. The video production for Coco’s cover has Disney’s stamp all over it – restricting, forced, and overdone – making her true potential linger behind her team’s objectives. There’s real talent from Coco, but – like those before her – her true potential has yet to come. Watch and download Coco Jones’ cover of Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally” below.
