Rappers from my hometown in Virginia have proven to have immensely successful careers. Now after the likes of Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and the Clipse comes Alex Freewifi, a fresh talent that’s ready to change the rap game forever. Alex’s recently released debut EP ‘This Is Yours’ features a genuine psychedelic hip-hop sound over beats from indie producers Jo Def, Ryan Brammeier, and IAMNOBODI. On EP standout “Natasha”, Alex cleverly samples Saint Heron signee Alina Baraz’s “Make You Feel” as his spits bars about a former lover. “I got used to you, like school lunch / but where’s the dopamine, you know the rush / paint the town red, just because” he raps over the slow-burning beat by Brammeier with ease. It’s noticeable that Alina’s mermaid-esque crooning meshes quite perfectly with Freewifi’s signature sound, who lists Animal Collective and D’Angelo as some of his musical influences. There’s something entrancing about Freewifi’s flow that reels you in from just a few seconds – it’s oddly different but still very much hip-hop in the most poetic way possible. The ‘This Is Yours’ EP is meant to preview the sound for his next studio project which will hopefully be a full-length one. Listen and download Alex Freewifi’s “Natasha” below.
