When it comes to pop stars who are consistently relevant, Carly Rae Jepsen is one of the last artists that would come to mind. Her breakout single “Call Me Maybe” spent nine weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts, but Carly quickly faded soon thereafter. A few more singles were released from ‘Maybe’ era that underperformed, which possibly influenced the reinvention for her new album ‘E-MO-TION’ out later this year. On “All That”, Carly enlists one of my favorite producers Ariel Rechtshaid to craft an 80s pop/rock number. She sings a love song about being everything for her somewhat hesitant lover. The song was co-written by Dev Hynes (of Blood Orange fame), which adds even more vintage appeal. The actual debut of “All Night” was live alongside Hynes courtesy of her flawless appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’. Overall, both versions (live and studio) are indications of a great example of artist maturity. “All That” is just as pop as its “Maybe” predecessor, but finds Carly artistically growing with her audience.
