Swedish-American vocalist Mapei’s first single may have impacted overseas in early 2013, but it looks like the song may be gearing up to an effect similar to Sam Smith’s “Latch” or Azealia Banks’ “212”. On “Don’t Wait”, the singer croons a very inspirational message of loving life while living in love. Mapei’s raspy, effortless vocals remind me of Kina or even India Arie, while her natural styling and quirky style sets her apart from her predecessors. “If it wasn’t for you, I’d be alone / if it wasn’t for you, I’d have to hold my own” sings Mapei with a commanding, powerful voice over a lite-EDM-meets-soul arrangement. “Wait” the video was produced by Dori Oskowitz and features her with her man dancing, playing basketball, and riding bikes together (#cuteness). The single is lifted from her debut album ‘Hey Hey’ released at the end of 2014 and has just begun to impact clubs and adult alternative radios stateside.
